The feline of Avenue B is heading to the Westside Theatre…and she has a lot to say about vaginas! Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega will join the cast of Los Monólogos de la Vagina, a Spanish version of Eve Ensler’s celebrated The Vagina Monologues. She will be joined by Maria Cellario and Flor de Liz Perez. The three begin performances on June 3. They will step in for Kate del Castillo, Angélica María and Angélica Vale, who will play their final performance on June 1.
Rubin-Vega recently appeared in Classic Stage Company’s off-Broadway revival of Romeo & Juliet. She received Tony nominations for her roles in Rent and Anna in the Tropics. Her other Broadway credits include The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Les Miserables and A Streetcar Named Desire. Rubin-Vega's film credits include Wild Things, Flawless and Jack Goes Boating. Cellario has appeared on Broadway in The Royal Family and Hedda Gabler. de Liz Perez's stage credits include In the Time of the Butterflies and The House that will not Stand at Berkeley Rep and Yale Rep.
Based on interviews with a diverse group of women—from a Long Island antique dealer to a Bosnian refugee—the show brazenly explores the humor, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement hidden in vaginas. The original production played over 1300 performances from 1999 to 2003 at the Westside Theatre. Los Monólogos de la Vagina is directed by Jaime Matarredona and is modeled after the current Mexico City production, now in its 14th year.
Rubin-Vega, Cellario and de Liz Perez will appear in the show through June 22.
