They Call Me Q celebrates its off-Broadway opening on June 4 at St. Luke’s Theatre. The emotionally charged comedy is written and performed by Qurrat Ann Kadwani.
They Call Me Q is the story of a girl from Bombay growing up in the Boogie Down Bronx who seeks balance between the cultural pressures brought forth by her traditional parents and wanting acceptance into her new culture. Along the journey, Kadwani transforms into 13 characters that have shaped her life including her parents, Caucasian teachers, Puerto Rican classmates and African-American friends.
Directed by Obaid Kadwani and Claudia Gaspar, the production was developed with Ellery Schaar. The play debuted in 2012 at Variations Theatre Group and went on to play Chicago, Montreal, Washington D.C., Nashville, Orlando and Hawaii.
