The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of King Lear opens officially at the Delacorte Theater on August 5. The outdoor mounting of the Bard’s tragedy, directed by Daniel Sullivan, stars Tony winner and Oscar nominee John Lithgow, Tony and Oscar nominee Annette Bening, Tony nominee Jessica Hecht and Jessica Collins. To commemorate the big night, Broadway.com resident artist Justin “Squigs” Robertson penned this sketch of the cast in action.
In addition to Lithgow as Lear, Bening as Goneril, Hecht as Regan and Collins as Cordelia, the portrait features Eric Sheffer Stevens as Edmund, Clarke Peters as Gloucester, Chukwudi Iwuji as Edgar, Jay O. Sanders as Kent, Steven Boyer as Fool, Christopher Innvar as Albany and Glenn Fleshler as Cornwall.
Broadway.com wishes the cast of King Lear a happy opening!
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home.
