We’re gonna be honest: Things around the Broadway.com offices have gotten really boring the last few weeks. It’s sweltering, it’s humid, and worst of all, no new Broadway shows open until after Labor Day. But never fear, dear readers, we’ve got a great way to spice up the month of August: Broadway.com Summer Camp! Each day for 31 days, we’re highlighting the campiest, craziest, wildest—and did we mention campiest?—videos we can find. Put on your gaudy bathing suit and dive in!
WHY WE LOVE IT
We’re suckers for whenever Broadway names find a reason to sing random showtunes on their TV shows. Exhibit A. And exhibit B: Patti LuPone in Life Goes On, submitted by Scott S. Now, there’s a very detailed backstory that leads to this performance…that we don’t remember. But basically, Libby, played by LuPone, auditions for a community college theater showcase. Here’s her audition, where she pulls a, well, a LuPone. Cut to rehearsals for her big number, “Broadway Baby” from Follies. Scott writes, "Ever the professional, nothing stops her from belting out the Sondheim tune. Not misplaced dancers, not a swinging stagehand and certainly not a collapsing set piece."
LOOK OUT FOR...
1:49. Focusing away from Patti for a sec, the role of the Pepto-Bismol swigging director is played by Dena Dietrich, a.k.a. Sophia’s daughter/Dorothy’s younger sister on The Golden Girls. You know about our obsession by now, right?
