Just in time for Rosh Hashanah, Fiddler on the Roof is celebrating its 50th anniversary! Aside from eating our weight in apples and honey and doing lots of impromptu bottle dances, the Broadway.com crew is paying homage to the beloved musical all week long. We’ve collected 50 fun facts, drum corps performances and Fran the Nanny as Fruma Sarah—now, we’re highlighting our five favorite performances from Tevyes throughout the world!
Japan – Hisaya Morishige
Morishige has performed Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (known as Yane No Ue No Baiorin-hiki in Japan) over 900 times! Here he is in Tokyo in 1982. The whole video is great, but you really haven’t lived until you’ve seen 1:20.
Germany – Shmuel Rodensky
The late Shmuel Rodensky famously played Tevye in various productions and tours of Fiddler (known as Anatevka in Germany) throughout Europe. Wow, this Tevye should really get a side gig as a gardener—those sunflowers are huge!
France – Ivan Rebroff
And the winner of the International Tevye Dance Competition goes to...Ivan Rebroff in Un Violon sur le Toit! The star of the 2010 Paris production really shakes his “biddy biddy bum” in this clip.
Mexico – Manuel Gorka
The Mexican production of Fiddler on the Roof (El violinista en el Tejado) in 2013 featured Manuel Gorka, who brings an operatic flair to the shtetl of Anatevka.
Netherlands – Henk Poort
Poort toured various Dutch theatres in 2008 and 2009 as Tevye in Fiddler (known as Anatevka in the Netherlands). Hey, wait a second...Is he flirting with those mamas at 1:35?!
Stay tuned for more Fiddler features all week long!
