The Humans, the latest play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Stephen Karam, will play off-Broadway as part of Roundabout Theatre Company’s New Play Initiative. Tony winner Joe Mantello will direct. Performances will begin in the fall of 2015 at the Laura Pels Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Centre for Theatre. Further information, including dates, casting and a creative team, will be announced at a later date.
The play explores the hilarity, heart and horrors of the modern American family. After a sleepless night, Mr. Blake brings his family from Pennsylvania to his daughter’s new apartment to celebrate Thanksgiving. As darkness falls outside the crumbling pre-war duplex, mysterious things start to go bump in the night and family tensions reach a boiling point. The play is set to premiere at Chicago's American Theater Company this November.
The Humans marks Karam’s second Roundabout commission, following Sons of the Prophet in 2011. In 2007, the theater company launched the Roundabout Underground program, with his play Speech & Debate as the inaugural production. His additional works include columbinus alongside PJ Paparelli and the libretto for the chamber opera Dark Sisters, on which he collaborated with composer Nico Muhly.
