Imelda Marcos is all over off-Broadway this year! Ma-Yi Theater Company, which is dedicated to developing and producing new plays by American writers, will present two plays in repertory this fall. The world premiere of Chairs and a Long Table, written by Han Ong, will begin on October 28 and open on November 7. Meanwhile, Carlos Celdran will bring his self-penned Livin’ La Vida Imelda to the U.S. beginning October 31. Opening night is set for November 5. Both productions will play the Clurman Theater at Theatre Row.
Livin’ La Vida Imelda explores cultural sensation that has surrounded the life of Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines. Celdran has performed the solo show at site-specific locations across the Philippines over the years. The production is directed by Ralph B. Peña.
In Chairs and a Long Table, a group of Asian American Actors prepare to attend a conference in Los Angeles addressing racial discrimination after a classic Chinese play is cast with two non-Asian actors as the leads. The cast includes Ron Domingo, Julie Fitzpatrick, Julienne Kim, Moses Villarama and Jeena Yi. Linsay Firman will direct.
Both productions will feature scenic design by Nick Francone, lighting design by Yi Zhao and costume design by Becky Bodurtha. Livin La Vida Imelda will feature sound design by Favian Obispo and projection design by Hannah Wasileski. Chairs and a Long Table will feature sound design by Nick Borisjuk.
