Dave is making his way from the White House to the Great White Way! Pulitzer and Tony-winning composer Tom Kitt, lyricist Nell Benjamin and book writer Thomas Meehan are joining forces for a musical adaptation of the 1993 comedy Dave, according to Variety. A closed door reading produced by Warners Bros. Theatre Ventures took place on October 31. The project is now on the fast track for a premiere as early as late 2015.
The film follows Dave Kovic, a temp agency operator who, due to his uncanny resemblance to Bill Mitchell, President of the United States, is asked to secretly stand in for him when the Commander-in-Chief falls into a coma. The film starred Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Frank Langella and Ben Kingsley.
Kitt is also reported to be working alongside frequent collaborator and lyricist Brian Yorkey on an adaption of the 2007 film The Visitor and of the 2012 hit Magic Mike. We’re hoping the latter brings the team their second Pulitzer. The two’s work can currently be heard on Broadway in If/Then.
Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures has some additional upcoming projects on their slate, including the stage adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery, which aims for a Broadway bow in the next year under the direction of Will Frears, and a musical adaptation of Beetlejuice, directed by Alex Timbers. The Warner Bros. team also brought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the West End and be involved in a potential transfer to the Great White Way during the 2016-17 season.
