Hey, you, still trying to stretch those Thanksgiving leftovers—you know you can’t make a meal out of turkey skin, olives, and pumpkin pie filling! Before you venture out of the house for edible food, be sure to check out what Broadway has to offer, including Laura Osnes’ new show and Sting’s stint in The Last Ship. Take a big bite out of this week’s picks!
Board The Last Ship with Sting
Starts December 9 at the Neil Simon Theatre
Sting isn't just a triple threat—he's a quintuple threat. The singer-songwriter-actor-bass player-memoirist is back on Broadway, temporarily stepping in for Jimmy Nail in his own musical The Last Ship. We’re eager to see what other multitasking Sting can accomplish. Maybe he’ll conduct the orchestra, handle the lighting and sell merch at the same time. Click for tickets!
Go on a Laura Osnes Adventure
Starts December 9 at 54 Below
We all face daily decisions: paper or plastic, soup or salad, Wicked or Rent. In The Path Not Taken, the talented Laura Osnes (Bonnie & Clyde, Grease) examines “what almost was and what might have been” in her Broadway journey. This new show is described as a “personal choose-your-own adventure,” though this one probably involves less reading and more awesome music. Click for tickets!
Let Anika Larsen Sing You to Sleep
Available online December 9
The holidays are officially here! Yay! With all of the shopping and social obligations, you’re this close to punching out a mall Santa—again. Well, we have a less violent, cheaper outlet for your yuletide rage. Beautiful star Anika Larsen’s debut album Sing You to Sleep is a collection of soothing numbers, such as “Summertime” and “Annie’s Song,” that Larsen sang to the little ones she's cared for throughout the years. That sounds effective…and adorable!
See Idina Menzel Live
December 12, check local listings
If/Then and Frozen star Idina Menzel will stop by Live! with Kelly & Michael to promote her new album Holiday Wishes and (we hope) belt a few tunes. Maybe Idina can tell us how she stars in a Broadway show, releases an album, and appears everywhere, all while being so fabulous. Did she find a magic lamp at a flea market? Does she have access to technology that bends time and space? We have to know!
Go Backstage with Disney
December 14, check local listings
Hosted by Broadway alum and Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, ABC’s Backstage with Disney on Broadway: Celebrating 20 Years keeps it simple. This one-hour TV special explores the House of Mouse’s eight Great White Way ventures, so you can dive into Disney’s current hits (The Lion King and Aladdin) and its past triumphs (Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast) without leaving your couch. Plus, we hear there's a bonus Darren Criss appearance, so it's a win-win.
