Despite some less-than-stellar reviews, the weekend box office figures cleared away the cobwebs and the sorrow for the Annie reboot. The film, following its December 19 wide release, came in third, grossing $16.3 million over the weekend, Deadline reports. It trailed behind The Hobbit: There and Back Again ($56.2 million) and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (17.3 million).
Comparatively, the film adaptation of Jersey Boys, which was released earlier this year in June, took in $13.3 million in its opening weekend. In Les Miserables’ December 2012 holiday weekend, the flick also secured third at $27.3 million. The first of The Hobbit trilogy was also tops for Les Miz's premiere weekend; showtunes just can’t beat the Shire.
The new Annie, which features revamped takes on Charles Strouse’s iconic tunes as well as new numbers penned by Sia, stars Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz and Bobby Cannavale. See what we learned about the movie from the stars themselves here.
