Hello to the Eugene O’Neill Theatre! Gavin Creel and Christopher John O’Neill board the Broadway cast of The Book of Mormon on January 6. Creel will re-create his Olivier-winning performance as Elder Price, taking over from Nic Rouleau, while O’Neill is stepping in for Ben Platt as Elder Cunningham. Both Creel and O’Neill have been playing the roles in the Tony-winning musical’s national tour.
Creel also created the role of Elder Price on the U.S. First National Tour, recently returning to lead the company in Toronto. He earned Tony nods for Thoroughly Modern Millie and Hair, additionally appearing in the latter in the West End. His other Broadway credits include Mary Poppins (which he also tread the boards in London in) and La Cage aux Folles. He was seen in the title role of the American Repertory Theater production of Prometheus Bound and starred alongside Julie Andrews in the television movies Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime.
In addition to The Book of Mormon, O’Neill has toured internationally with The Chris and Paul Show. He made his professional theatrical debut in The Book of Mormon in December 2012, and the tuner will mark his first bow on the Great White Way.
Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q composer Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon earned nine 2011 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
