After a short-lived run on the Great White Way in 2013, a spokesperson for the off-Broadway production of Soul Doctor has confirmed that the show will play its final performance on January 25 after just two months. Directed by Mindy Cooper, the tuner stars Josh Nelson as Shlomo Carlebach and officially opened on December 14.
The bio-musical features music by Carlebach, lyrics by David Schecter with additional lyrics by Carlebach and a book by Daniel S. Wise. It tells the story of the beloved yet controversial father of popular Jewish music, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, and his friendship with legendary jazz singer Nina Simone. As a “Rock Star Rabbi” of the 1960s, Carlebach struggled to harmonize his traditional beliefs with the “free love” generation.
In addition to Nelson, the cast includes Dan’yelle Williamson as Nina Simone, as well as Dianna Barger, Debra Cardona, Jacob Heimer, Anthony Laciura, Don Meehan, Hayden Wall, Lee Hollis Bussie, Rosalie Graziano, Janelle McDermoth, Erin Mosher, John Plumpis and Jesse Swimm.
