John Goodman and Tom Sturridge will join the previously announced former Homeland star Damian Lewis in the West End revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo. Directed by Daniel Evans, the production will play a limited engagement at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre April 16 through June 27. Opening night is set for April 27.
Goodman will be making his West End debut. He first came to prominence for his Golden Globe-winning role on Roseanne and has subsequently become well-known for his frequent collaborations on screen with the Coen Brothers in films such as Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou? Other screen credits include Argo, The Artist, Inside Llewyn Davis, Monuments Men, The West Wing, Dancing on the Edge, The Gambler, Alpha House and the upcoming Valencia and Trumbo. Goodman has been seen on Broadway in Waiting for Godot and Big River.
Sturridge received a Tony nod for Orphans. Other theater credits include Punk Rock, Wastwater and No Quarter. His film credits include Being Julia, The Boat That Rocked, Effie Gray and On the Road. He will soon star in Thomas Vinterberg's new film adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel Far from the Madding Crowd alongside Carey Mulligan and is also set to play Henry VI alongside Dame Judi Dench and Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC’s next Hollow Crown series.
Mamet’s drama examines the fickle nature of honor among thieves. As three small-time crooks, Walter “Teach” Cole (Lewis), Don Dubrow (Goodman) and Bobby (Sturridge), plan one big-time heist, a tragedy of errors spins this razor-sharp and darkly funny play into a blistering account of divided loyalties, insatiable greed and a coveted Buffalo nickel.
American Buffalo premiered at the Goodman Theatre, Chicago and opened on Broadway on February 16, 1977. The play was also adapted into to a 1996 film starring Dennis Franz (Don), Dustin Hoffman (Teach) and Sean Nelson (Bobby).
The production will feature sets and costumes by Paul Wills and lighting by Mark Henderson.
