Head Downtown for JRB & Sierra Boggess
January 26 at SubCulture
When you’re super talented like composer-lyricist Jason Robert Brown, the man whose music has elevated everything from The Last Five Years to The Bridges of Madison County, you get perks. Lots of perks. One of them, aside from free hand sanitizer at select Duane Reades, is curating your own concert series. This time around, Brown welcomes guest artist Sierra Boggess and a surprise guest who should not suck. Talent attracts talent, right? Click for tickets!
Stay Up Late with Tony Danza & Martin Short
January 26 on CBS
Two Broadway stars on the same talk show? What!? Did the ghost of the Lunts haunt the brass at CBS late night programming? Whatever, let’s savor Martin Short (It’s Only a Play) and Tony Danza (Honeymoon in Vegas) stopping by The Late Late Show. Even better, the two charmers will swap stories with guest host Regis Philbin, a friggin’ national treasure. Stay up late. Nap during the budget meeting. Your boss won’t care.
Say Hello to a New Lola
Begins January 27 at the Al Hirschfield Theatre
Kinky Boots star Billy Porter is off to headline The Colored Museum in Boston; he returns April 28. That leaves a big pair of giant, fabulous boots to fill. Kyle Taylor Parker is ready to step into them. Parker currently stars as Lola in the national tour. Before that, he understudied Lola and was an Angel in the Broadway production. In other words, all is well in the Land of Lola! Click for tickets!
Enjoy a Country Romance
Begins January 29 at the Classic Stage Company
Everything old is new again, especially when two of the small screen’s biggest stars get involved. This revival of Ivan Turgenev’s A Month in the Country stars Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) as Natalya, who comes undone upon the arrival of her young son’s handsome tutor. Also affected are Natalya’s husband and secretly smitten friend, played by Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). The all-star cast also includes Anthony Edwards and Annabella Sciorra. Click for tickets!
See Idina Menzel Score a Touchdown
February 1 on NBC
Most Broadway fans don't care about the Super Bowl. It's just one group of anonymous muscular guys grappling with another group of anonymous muscular guys. (Well, maybe you care a little!) Want a good reason to give a damn? Two words: funny commercials. Two more words: Idina Menzel, who in her quest to sing at every major televised event, will perform the national anthem before the big game. See, sports aren’t so bad!
