Broadway supernova Idina Menzel is of course no stranger to belting her face off in front of large crowds on a regular basis. But singing the national anthem on Super Bowl Sunday is a completely different matter.
“The thing you underestimate when you get up there,” the If/Then headliner told AZCentral, “”is how much testosterone is coming at you when you’re standing up there in the middle of the field and all those guys are in the uniforms.” She felt that rush last summer standing next to Derek Jeter at the MLB All-Star game, and now she’ll feel it again with dozens of footballers. “They’re huge and they’re all standing there listening to you.”
No matter how accustomed she is to performing live, the Tony winner still experience that rush of uncertainty. “I can do five to eight shows a week and do a great show or something can happen on the live stage. It’s what makes it exciting and exhilarating for me.”
Super Bowl XLIX kicks off on February 1. In addition to Menzel singing the national anthem, Grammy winner John Legend will perform “America the Beautiful” before the game. Katy Perry will lead the halftime show. Oh, and the Patriots and Seahawks will play.
