Hey, you, frantically whipping up a 47-layer bean dip for your Idina Menzel Super Bowl party: Pace yourself! Going to work the day after eating three pounds of Doritos is draining. It’s time to take a break and plan the rest of your week. We have a Smash favorite performing at Lincoln Center, Larry David’s new play, and two splashy additions to Chicago. Make room for this week’s picks!
See Chicago's New Cellblock Residents
Begins February 2 at the Ambassador Theatre
A Broadway favorite gets some welcome country flavor as Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles starts her much-anticipated run as Roxie Hart. If that doesn’t get you excited—are you made of stone?—Pippin and Beautiful alum Carly Hughes joins the newly minted Broadway.com vlogger as Velma Kelly. Still not excited? Perhaps you’re on the wrong Website. Or maybe you are made out of stone. You should see a doctor about that. Click for tickets!
Unleash Your Enthusiasm at Larry David
Begins February 2 at the Cort Theatre
America’s favorite curmudgeon, Larry David, makes his Broadway debut in Fish in the Dark, an ensemble comedy he wrote and stars in. We couldn’t be happier. Poor David, however, sounds like he’s about to split the atom with a butter knife. Relax, Lar. As the creative juice behind two of television’s most influential comedies in the last 30 years—Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm—you know what you’re doing. Probably. Click for tickets!
Visit Marin Mazzie’s Wonder Years
Begins February 4 at 54 Below
Three-time Tony nominee Marin Mazzie, last seen in Bullets Over Broadway, gets the spotlight for four nights at 54 Below. According to the venue, the audience should prepare for an “evening of fun and fantasy” as “we get inside the head of a Midwest girl and the music she loved.” Sounds great. And way more fun than our formative years, which featured a lot of daytime TV, angry journaling, and quiet sobbing. Click for tickets!
Stay In with Kristin Chenoweth
Available for purchase February 3
We advocate devouring all the fun this city has to offer. However, it never hurts to have options handy in case you want to have a decadent night in. Start preparing now: stock up on the good ice cream, buy a nice pair of slippers, and purchase On the Twentieth Century star Kristin Chenoweth’s live concert Coming Home, which is on DVD today. The songbird’s homecoming show, which aired last year on PBS, is sweet relief from a rough day.
Start Your Weekend with Megan Hilty
February 6 at Lincoln Center
Friday is the perfect time to treat yourself. No, we’re not talking about the latest tepid multiplex offering followed by equally tepid pizza. We have an option you cannot refuse: the glorious Megan Hilty making her American Songbook debut. The Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Smash star (and new mom!) will perform Broadway favorites and songs from her album, It Happens All the Time. Click for tickets!
