Her Majesty has arrived! The Audience, starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II, opens officially at Broadway’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 8. To celebrate this regal occasion, Broadway.com resident artist Justin “Squigs” Robertson penned this sketch of the Dame and the many faces seen in the Stephen Daldry-helmed production.
In addition to Mirren, the portrait features Dylan Baker as John Major, Michael Elwyn as Anthony Eden, Dakin Matthews as Winston Churchill, Richard McCabe as Harold Wilson, Rod McLachlan as Gordon Brown, Rufus Wright as David Cameron and Tony Blair and Judith Ivey as Margaret Thatcher, as well as Geoffrey Beevers as the equerry.
Happy opening to the cast of The Audience! May you have a celebration fit for, well, a queen. And a handful of prime ministers.
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home.
