Josh Radnor, two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz and more Broadway alums have been tapped for PBS’ Civil War drama Mercy Street. Executive produced by Ridley Scott, Roxann Dawson and Jeremy Webb will helm the six-part series, which will air in winter 2016.
Radnor was last seen on the Great White Way in Disgraced and will play Jedediah Foster, a civilian contract surgeon who grew up in a privileged Southern slave-owning household as the son of a wealthy Maryland landowner. Butz, who won Tonys for Catch Me If You Can and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, will take on the role of Dr. Byron Hale, an old-school army surgeon who lives life by the book.
Meanwhile, two-time Tony winner Cherry Jones will guest star as as Dorothea Dix, known as “Miss Dix,” the formidable superintendent of Union Army nurses. Other Great White Way alums set to make an appearance in the series include two-time Tony winner Donna Murphy as Jane Green, Peter Geret as Dr. Alfred Summers, Shalita Grant as Aurelia Johnson, L. Scott Caldwell as Belinda, Suzanne Bertish as Matron Brannan, Wade Williams as Silas Bullen, Luke Macfarlane as Chaplain Hopkins and Brad Koed as James Green, Jr.
Mercy Street follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposing sides of the Civil War. Inspired by memoirs and letters from real doctors and nurse volunteers, the series will reveal the stories of those struggling to save lives while managing their own hardships. Along with Radnor and Butz, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Gary Cole and Peter Gerety will have leading roles in the project.
