Original Hedwig and the Angry Inch star and co-creator John Cameron Mitchell has made us wig out yet again! He recently revealed that he would “love” Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga to step into our favorite internationally ignored song stylist’s heels. “They’re people who have the skills who I don’t think have used them all at the same time in an emotionally substantial piece,” Mitchell told Queerty.
The 2015 Tony honoree also discussed the in the works Hedwig sequel, which will be a TV miniseries. "It’s not going to be anytime soon, but we have done a lot of work on it.” And worried that Mitchell's recent stint on Broadway as Hedwig would be the last time he put on her makeup? Never fear, because he said that he will “probably” play Hedwig in the small screen project.
Mitchell wrote the book for Hedwig alongside composer Stephen Trask, and the stars performed early versions of the musical at Don Hill’s and the Westbeth Theatre Center. Mitchell later starred in the off-Broadway incarnation of the hit musical at the Jane Street Theatre in 1998. He directed, wrote and starred in the 2001 film adaptation of Hedwig, garnering a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. Mitchell has appeared on Broadway in The Secret Garden, Big River and Six Degrees of Separation, and was most recently seen on the small screen in Girls, playing David Pressler-Goings, Hannah’s book publisher.
Directed by Michael Mayer, the Tony-winning Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch is playing at the Belasco Theatre and currently stars Darren Criss in the title role.
