Broadway Grosses: No Puzzlement Here! The King and I Plays to Full Houses as Ken Watanabe Waltzes Out
Audiences keep going and going and going, et cetera et cetera. The Tony-winning Broadway revival of The King and I reached 100% capacity for the third consecutive week and fell just short of joining the top five grossing shows. Tony and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe played his final performance at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on June 12; Broadway alum Jose Llana will step in as The King of Siam beginning July 14. We suspect the dazzling production will have no trouble continuing to waltz its way to the top of the boards after this cast change. (Have you heard Kelli O’Hara? And have you seen that boat?!) Additionally, the ABBA tuner Mamma Mia! has seen a steady rise in gross and capacity in recent weeks. Crowds have until September 12 to lay all their love on the Broadhurst Theatre.
