Christopher Smith, the cop turned Broadway composer/lyricist, believes that the beloved song "is one of the only things we can agree on as a culture." He also talked of how he discovered the story of John Newton, the British slave trader in the 1700s who penned the hymn."I was literally wandering through a library and pulled a book off a shelf at random," said Smith.
