Here's a quick roundup of stories you may have missed today.
'Let It Go' Rages On
It would seem that nobody can keep this song out of their heads. Tony winner Idina Menzel’s Oscar-winning rendition of “Let It Go” from Frozen has been certified Platinum for the eighth time. In layperson’s terms it means that the Robert and Kristen-Anderson Lopez-penned song has shipped eight million digital units. Confirming that a) it looks like our favorite Broadway supernova will be the queen for some time to come and b) frozen fractals are here to stay. Well, we suppose the cold never bothered us anyway.
Luke Evans' Bromance With Josh Gad
Luke Evans recently took on the role of Gaston in the Disney live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast and he bonded with another stage and screen fave on set—big time! “He’s a very, very generous man,” Evans told Collider about Josh Gad. “And we’re a duo. We want people to love Gaston and Le Fou (Gad’s character), and we didn’t have to try, because I love Josh…He left, sadly, two weeks before I wrapped and it was not the same.” What about the new numbers from Alan Menken and Tim Rice? “They’re beautiful…the thought and love that has gone into those two songs honor the work of the original so well.” The Bill Condon-helmed project, starring Emma Watson as Belle, will hit movie theaters on March 17, 2017. Yes, 2017. Patience is a virtue. Or something.
Word of Mouth Spreads Like the Plague for Rotten!
Yet more fans of puffy pants and pointy leather boots (not to mention ridiculously large codpieces)! New musical comedy Something Rotten! has been named Winner in the Best Broadway Show category at the 2015 Concierge Choice Awards. The hospitality industry’s most prestigious awards gala took place on September 21 at Battery Gardens in Battery Park; Brian d’Arcy James, Christian Borle and more continue to welcome you to the Renaissance eight shows a week at the St. James Theatre.
Luff & Maroulis are Breaking Through
Broadway alums Alison Luff (Matilda) and Constantine Maroulis (Rock of Ages) will lead the cast of new musical Breaking Through. The show follows a singer-songwriter as she tries to navigate the treacherous shark-filled waters of the music business. Directed by Sheldon Epps, with music and lyrics by Cliff Downs and Katie Kahanovitz and a book by Kirsten Guenther, Breaking Through is set to make its world premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse. The cast will also include Kacee Clanton, Robert W. Arbogast, David Atkinson, Will Collyer, Teya Patt, Katherine Tokarz and Nita Whitaker. Previews begin on October 27, with opening night set for November 1. With this talent attached, we're keeping an eye on this one.
