After struggling with low grosses for some time, Dames at Sea is set to end its Broadway voyage on January 3, 2016. At time of closing, the musical, starring Main Stem fave Lesli Margherita and more, will have played 32 previews and 85 regular performances. Dames at Sea officially opened on October 22 at the Helen Hayes Theatre.
Directed by Randy Skinner, Dames at Sea tells the story of Ruby, who steps off a bus from Utah and into her first Broadway show. But hours before the opening night curtain is set to rise, the cast learns that their theater is being demolished. With the help of some adoring sailors, Ruby and the cast set a plan in motion to perform the show in a naval battleship.
The cast also includes Mara Davi, Danny Gardner, Eloise Kropp, Cary Tedder and John Bolton.
The musical, which features music by Jim Wise and a book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller, first opened at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre in 1968 in a production starring Bernadette Peters, then transferred to the Theater de Lys (now the Lucille Lortel Theatre) in 1969, where it played for 575 performances. This production marked Dames at Sea's Broadway premiere. A national tour is planned to begin in the fall of 2017.
