Hey, you, trying to decide between Sexy Joe Papp and Slutty Jean Valjean for Halloween. They are both horrible, terrible ideas. Your time would be better spent sampling what this glorious city has to offer, including a starry staged reading, a Broadway debut and Megan Hilty and Andy Karl in concert. Get ready for this week’s picks!
Enjoy Supergirl’s Broadway Flavor
Premieres October 26 on CBS
Supporting Broadway’s best means going beyond the stage. No, we don’t mean doing James Earl Jones’s taxes, cleaning Lesli Margherita’s kitchen or doing anything that will lead to a restraining order. Keep it simple and legal, like checking out the series premiere of Supergirl, which features two of our favorites, Laura Benanti and Jeremy Jordan. Oh, and here’s a bonus: the show looks pretty darn good!
Get Charitable with Wesley Taylor
October 26 at New World Stages
We usually don’t promote readings, which conjure images of drafty gyms and folding chairs harder than nuclear physics. There are exceptions. First, if it’s charitable. Second, if the readings are short plays by Wesley Taylor, the actor your probably know from The Addams Family, Rock of Ages and Smash. Third, and finally, if the actors involved include Debra Messing, Nathan Lane and Stockard Channing. So, yeah, get going and support the Actors Fund. Click for tickets!
Meet Hamilton’s New King
Begins October 27 at Richard Rodgers Theatre
Everything is going right for Hamilton. Its devoted, high profile fan base includes the leader of the free world. The creator has been recognized as a genius. But, oh no!, Jonathan Groff is leaving (temporarily) to wrap up Looking. Thankfully, the supremely talented Andrew Rannells takes over as King George! Phew! Now if everyone in the cast could just stay in the show forever that would be great. Does that work for you, Lin? Click for tickets!
Load Up with Megan Hilty
October 27 and 28 at New York City Center
Megan Hilty and Andy Karl are everywhere these days; not that we’re complaining. What will we complain about: just two performances of Encores!’ Annie Get Your Gun concert, which stars these two dynamos. How do we get more, gods of Broadway? Would you like us to talk to our mom every day, stop making fun of tourists? We’re willing to listen—after we’re done enjoying what should be a rousing event. Click for tickets!
See King Charles III Bow
Opens November 1 at the Music Box Theatre
People either love the royal family like their own or would rather get a paper cut in the eye than read about their comings and goings. Leave it to Broadway to bridge that gap! Mike Bartlett’s King Charles III imagines a world in which Queen Elizabeth II dies, making Prince Charles the new king. The drama is also delivered in Shakespearean verse, which gives the modern-day tale even greater weight. Click for tickets!
