Will it be Rose's turn once more on the Great White Way? The acclaimed U.K. revival of Gypsy, which will end its West End engagement on November 28, is aiming to land on Broadway in 2017, the Daily Mail reports. Directed by Jonathan Kent and headlined by Imelda Staunton, the production transferred to London's Savoy Theatre after a successful run at Chichester.
Gypsy, featuring a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, tells the story of how Rose Hovick (or Mama Rose, as she is best known) inadvertently helps to turn her daughter, Louise, into the burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. It last played the London stage in 1973, starring Angela Lansbury as the ultimate stage mother.
The classic tuner was most recently seen on Broadway in 2008 with Patti LuPone and in 2003 starring Bernadette Peters. The original Main Stem production of Gypsy opened on May 21, 1959 at the Broadway Theatre, later transferring to the Imperial; it was subsequently also revived in 1974 and 1989.
