The 27th annual Gypsy of the Year competition raised an impressive $4,786,239 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and that’s as good a reason as any for Kinky Boots and Hamilton to join forces to rap about chicken and sarsaparilla. At the December 8 celebration at the New Amsterdam Theatre, current Lola Wayne Brady shed his titular footwear to welcome Lin-Manuel Miranda and Christopher Jackson to the stage. The three showed off their freestyle skills in their own cypher, in which they had to incorporate audience-suggested words. The result: top honors for Kinky Boots for best onstage presentation! The event has raised a total of $67.3 million since 1989. This year, The Book of Mormon claimed the lead as top fundraiser on Broadway, collecting $414,857 for the organization.
