Broadway Hits the Screen: Tony Winners & Stage Favorites Earn 2016 Golden Globe Nominations

The nominations for the 2016 Golden Globes were announced on December 10, and a plethora of Tony winners and stage favorites received recognition for their screen performances. The 73rd annual ceremony, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air on NBC on January 10.

Tony winner Eddie Redmayne, who won a Golden Globe and Oscar last year for The Theory of Everything, picked up a nomination for The Danish Girl in Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama), as did Tony winner Bryan Cranston for Trumbo. Tony winners Maggie Smith, Lily Tomlin and Al Pacino (currently in China Doll on Broadway) were nominated for their leading performances in the comedies The Lady in the Van, Grandma and Danny Collins, respectively.

In the Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture categories, Tony winner Helen Mirren received a nod for Trumbo, as did Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies. Saoirse Ronan, who will make her Broadway debut next year in The Crucible, earned a spot in Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for Brooklyn.

There was also a strong showing of Broadway names in the TV categories. Tony winner Viola Davis picked up a nod for her leading performance in How to Get Away with Murder (she also picked up an Emmy earlier this year). Additional Tony winners to pick up nods were Liev Schrieber for Ray Donovan, Tomlin, in her second nomination of the morning, for Grace and Frankie, Rylance (also in a second nomination) for Wolf Hall, Alan Cumming for The Good Wife and Judith Light for Transparent.

Additional Broadway names to earn nominations for their small screen triumphs include Patrick Stewart for Blunt Talk, Felicity Huffman for American Crime, Patrick Wilson for Fargo and two performers who also won Emmys this year: Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent and Uzo Aduba for Orange is the New Black.

The drama Spotlight, featuring Tony-nominated Something Rotten! star Brian d’Arcy James, was nominated for Best Motion Picture (Drama). The Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle, starring Bernadette Peters, is up for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy); the show's second season will be available on December 30.
