Two-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl will headline the world premiere of the Groundhog Day musical at London's Old Vic this year, according to Daily Mail columnist Baz Bamigboye. The show reunites Matilda director and composer Matthew Warchus and Tim Minchin and will feature a book by Danny Rubin.
The musical has already marked its calendar for a Broadway transfer; the show will begin performances on January 23, 2017 and open on March 9 at a theater to be announced.
Karl received Tony nods for his two most recent Broadway performances: On the Twentieth Century and Rocky. His additional credits include a current arc on Law & Order: SVU, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Jersey Boys, 9 to 5 and Legally Blonde and Wicked.
Groundhog Day, based on the 1993 film of the same name, follows Phil (Karl), a weatherman who finds himself repeating the same day over and over (and over) again. With the rodent-centered national holiday playing on repeat, he soon realizes he must take advantage of the phenomenon in order to win the heart of his coworker Rita.
