It's almost the weekend, which means it's almost time to watch Channing Tatum tap dance and dream of the day he teaches us some Magic Mike moves! Until that happens (it's bound to eventually, right?), let's revisit some of the craziest, wildest, wig-flippingest moments from this past week on the Great White Way. From a rapping Founding Father taking the Grammys to a Starbucks barista winning our and Alex Brightman's hearts, here's the Lessons of the Week!
The Grammys Are the Room Where...Yep
How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman get to the Grammy Awards? It’s easy if he’s also the subject of a hot Broadway blockbuster. Hamilton will perform their opening number at the Grammys. Musical theater on the small screen is always usually amazing, and just think of how many people will hear it for the first time and not be able to get a ticket!
Ashford's Got a Late Night Double Feature
Look who's up for a little Horror! Annaleigh Ashford is going to jump to the left, step to the right and the whole shebang as Columbia in the Rocky Horror Picture Show remake. There's no one we'd rather see walking down the street just having a think than our favorite magical Tony winner. After all, who else would be fab in a gold-sequined top hat and tap shoes? Other than Channing Tatum.
Tveitertots Got a LOT of Greased Lightning
OK, that's totally not a lesson at this point. But yes, he gave us (and 17 million viewers worldwide) chills that were multiplyin' in Grease: Live. Thanks to all of you who played along with our #GreaseSighting tweet-a-long, we got plenty of pics coming in of our Broadway boyfriend in a leather jacket, short shorts and more. There are worse things we could do than rewatch it every day, right? RIGHT?
Alex Brightman's Got a Barista Bae
There’s a girl who works at Starbucks who is very inspirational. She is very inspirational because of many things. Primarily because she takes care of our School of Rock vlogger Alex Brightman’s caffeine intake. Her name is Toni, and if you’re ever in the mood for a triple grande one-pump Cinnamon Dolce Latte, she’s got you covered. Bring us java, bring us joy, Toni! You’re officially our star of this week’s Lessons.
Josh Segarra's Assetts Are All Over
Let’s talk about butts for a minute. Specifically, Josh Segarra’s. You can catch it in On Your Feet! in short shorts that rival Tveit's Grease getup or in a close-up in Trainwreck. While on Show People, Segarra walked us through the latter. According to him, it was entirely Amy Schumer’s idea to show off his assets on camera. Thank you, Amy. You’re also our star of this week’s Lessons.
Ben Rappaport Can't Escape the Broadway
What do Camryn Manheim and Ben Rappaport have in common? They’ve both hit the Broadway stage this season, and they’ve both once sold concessions at their respective theaters. In the premier episode of Adam Kantor’s Fiddler on the Roof vlog, Rappaport recalled his earlier days at the Broadway Theatre, where he used to be an actual water bearer. This lesson is making us thirsty. (Um. Did we use that right?)
Rachel Bloom Is the Queen of Patter
We love karaoke. We love patter songs. We just never thought to do patter songs at karaoke. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Rachel Bloom, while talking all things Broadway, told us she loves to perform “Ya Got Trouble” from The Music Man “because it makes everyone really uncomfortable.” Uncomfortable with a capital “U” and that rhymes with “Q” and that stands for “Quick, someone please send us a video of this.”
Emily Skinner's Our MT Guru
When Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner answer your questions, you also get a musical theater history lesson. The Side Show duo, who are rejoining at the hip for a weekend of belting at Feinstein’s/54 Below, shared that Skinner’s typically the one teaching Ripley about obscure shows. Did you know Andy Griffith was in a musical in the ‘50s? Emily Skinner did! Thanks, Emily Skinner!
Montego Gave Fantine an Early Haircut
We all know Fantine gets a less-than-desirable new 'do in Les Miserables (to help her daughter!). Unfortunately for Montego Glover, who just wrapped up her stint in the show, sometimes that haircut is a little preemptive. The Tony nominee revealed on #LiveatFive that when her wig once came off onstage causing her to flee for a lace-front adjustment. There was a time when bobby pins were kind...but it all went wrong.
James Corden Will Light Up the Tonys
Tony winner, movie musical star and CBS darling James Corden will host this year’s Tony Awards on—you guessed it—CBS. In his previous and current hosting gigs, he’s done everything from riff it out behind the wheel with J. Hud to take Phantom on the actual road. He’s on fire, and we mean that literally: He really did set himself on fire at the Brit Awards. Take that, Angela Lansbury!
