Happy Friday! We’ve had a wild week on the Great White Way, so take a break from your Frozen dream casting session to catch up on the Lessons of the Week. The past seven days brought us a bald Glinda, a School of Rock sobfest and a really bizarre craving for crustaceans; figure out why below!
Brooke Ashton Is a Fresh Princess
Now this is a story all about how Megan Hilty’s life got flipped-turned upside down. And we’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, and we’ll tell you how she became the princess of Noises Off, nearly bare. The Broadway bombshell revealed that she got her inspiration for her character's line-mouthing habit from Will Smith on early episodes of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. They're essentially the same character, right?
Carly Hughes' Devil Has Weird Cravings
You know what pairs well with a nice knee-high boot or a silver heel? Shellfish. At the press day for Encores!’ Cabin in the Sky, Carly Hughes said the hypothetical devil on her shoulder tells her to get shoes…and lobster. Like, together, Carly? Is that a thing? Are you the reason Red Lobster had a 33% spike in sales? Take THAT, Beyoncé.
Glinda's Bobby Pins Are Not So Popular
There seems to be a lace-front exodus on the Great White Way. Last week, Montego Glover told us the harrowing tale of Fantine’s preemptive haircut. This week on #LiveatFive, Allegiance’s Katie Rose Clarke revisited a traumatizing Wicked moment where her blonde curls flew off while in the Glinda bubble. Ladies: Pin. Those. Wigs. DOWN. If you can’t do this, you need more bobby pins.
Cassie Beck's Not Going on that Titanic II
We’ve all got seemingly irrational fears. For instance, we’re scared of our wigs falling off while in the Glinda bubble and cell phones ringing in the presence of Patti LuPone. The Humans star Cassie Beck’s fear? Ships. Not sinking ships—just ships. Big ones, in particular. Cassie, don’t you know what show was in the theater you’re in just a few months ago? Let’s hope Dames at Sea didn’t leave any sets behind.
Adam Kantor's Vocal Coach Is Exclusive
When you’re starring in a Broadway hit, it’s imperative you keep your voice in tip-top condition. Many performers opt to work with a vocal coach. Meet Adam Kantor and his Fiddler castmate Jessica Vosk’s coach: Kiz Lapan (no relation to Liz Caplan). Ms. Laplan stopped by the revival’s album recording session to demonstrate a few tricks of the trade. Kiz, you look like someone who currently vlogs for us. Do you ever get that?
Sutton Foster's Heading to Stars Hollow
Where you lead, Sutton Foster, we will follow. The Tony-winning star of Younger has booked her next small screen gig: the Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls. How could that get any better? Here’s how: creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is also the woman behind the Foster-led Bunheads. Sutton recently told us she wants to play Bunheads’ Michelle Simms again. Will this be her chance? Does Miss Patty need a new dance instructor?
School of Rock Graduation Is Super Sad
Forget Les Miz, Fun Home or The Color Purple. The biggest tearjerker on Broadway is backstage at the Winter Garden. In the final episode of Hard Rock Life, Alex Brightman and his School of Rock castmates bid farewell to Jared Parker (who played Lawrence, on keys), fellow rockers Evie Dolan and Corinne Wilson sang a tribute to their departing friend. The cast cried. We cried. Everyone cried.
Scout's Gonna Learn Some Sorkinisms
Well this is really quite something. Aaron Sorkin, the man behind The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Newsroom and more, and the man who can write a series of anti-tech monologues and a Steve Job biopic, will adapt To Kill a Mockingbird for the stage. Start practicing your walk-and-talk, Atticus hopefuls!
Chris Sieber Is a Patient Trunchbull
If you want to play Miss Trunchbull in Matilda on Broadway, you’re going to have to go through a lot. Like, “a 45-minute Skype session with director Matthew Warchus” a lot. That’s what Christopher Sieber had to endure before booking the gig. Sure, that hefty suit and mole adhesive create their own challenges, but that's intense. Cut to the chase, Warchus. We need to practice our javelin skills.
Frozen Won't Let Go of Broadway
Is your soul spiraling in frozen fractals all around? One, ouch. Two, you’re in luck, because Frozen is on track to come to the Great White Way…in just over two years, after playing a pre-Broadway tryout in Denver. While casting likely won’t be announced anytime soon, we have an idea for who should take on the role of Elsa—someone approved by Idina Menzel herself.
