West End alum Meera Syal has joined the cast of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s Romeo and Juliet. Syal will take on the role of the Nurse, joining Richard Madden as Romeo, Lily James as Juliet and Derek Jacobi as Mercutio. The staging, directed by Branagh and Rob Ashford, begins performances at London’s Garrick Theatre on May 12 and opens officially on May 25.
Syal’s previous stage credits include Behind the Beautiful Forevers, If You Don’t Let Us Dream, We Won’t Let You Sleep, Much Ado About Nothing, Bombay Dreams and Rafta, Rafta. On screen, she has appeared in the films A Nice Arrangement, Beauitful Thing and All In Good Time and on television in Goodness Gracious Me, Broadchurch and The Kumars at No. 42.
Joining James, Madden, Jacobi and Syal will be Marisa Berenson as Lady Capulet, Jack Colgrave Hirst as Benvolio, Tom Hanson as Paris, Matthew Hawksley as Anthony, Taylor James as Prince, Ansu Kabia as Tybalt, Racheal Ofori as Potpan, Nikki Patel as Balthasar, Chris Porter as Lord Montague, Zoë Rainey as Lady Montague, Michael Rouse as Lord Capulet, Sam Valentine as Friar Laurence and Kathryn Wilder as Peta/Apothecary.
