Beth Behrs, star of CBS’ 2 Broke Girls, will lead the cast of the world premiere of Halley Feiffer’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of New York City. The MCC Theater production will begin performances on May 19 (instead of the previously reported August start) at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, where it’s set to open on June 7. Trip Cullman will direct. Joining Behrs on stage will be Lisa Emery and Jacqueline Sydney.
In A Funny Thing Happened..., a foul-mouthed twenty-something comedian and a middle-aged man embroiled in a nasty divorce are brought together unexpectedly when their cancer-stricken mothers become roommates in the hospital. Together, this unlikely duo must negotiate some of life’s biggest challenges...while making some of the world’s most inappropriate jokes. Can these two very lost people learn to laugh through their pain and lean on each other when all they really want to do is run away?
In addition to 2 Broke Girls, Behrs has appeared on screen in Hello, My Name is Doris and lent her voice to Monsters University. As previously reported, she is also the co-creator of the upcoming web series Dents; she is collaborating on the digital comic with her best friend and Broadway favorite Matt Doyle. While this marks Behrs’ off-Broadway debut, she’s not entirely new to performing for the stage, having performed with the New York Philharmonic for One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch.
Emery recently appeared on Netflix’s drama Jessica Jones; her Broadway credits include Casa Valentina, Relatively Speaking, The Smell of the Kill and The Women. Sydney has appeared on stage in New York and regionally in Dear Harvey, The Kitchen Table and Money, Love and Shame!.
Additional casting will be announced later. The play will feature sets by Lauren Helpern, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Matthews Richards and sound design by Darron L West.
And just for fun, here’s Behrs showing off her soprano on some Les Miserables.
