Tony, Emmy and Grammy-winning composer Marc Shaiman married his partner, Lieutenant Commander Louis Mirabal, on March 26. The wedding was set up as a surprise for attendees following Mirabal’s retirement ceremony in New Jersey.
Shaiman won a Tony for the score of Hairspray with his co-lyricist Scott Wittman; the two also wrote Catch Me If You Can and music for Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me on Broadway. They received two Emmy nominations for songs from the NBC series Smash; the pair penned the numbers for the fictional Bombshell musical. Shaiman has received five Oscar nominations for original songs and scores, including “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut.
From posts on Instagram and videos shared by Shaiman, both ceremonies were star-studded and full of talent. Take a look below at Hairspray alum Jenifer Lewis performing the national anthem and Tony winner Nathan Lane reciting “Old Glory” during the passing of the flag (paired with Shaiman’s score for The American President).
