The company has been set for Signature Theatre’s Signature Plays, a presentation of Edward Albee’s The Sandbox, María Irene Fornés’ Drowning and Adrienne Kennedy’s Funnyhouse of a Negro. The ensemble cast will include Tony winner Frank Wood, Phyllis Somerville and Tony nominees Alison Fraser and Sahr Ngaujah.
Tickets are now available for performances, which will run from May 3 through June 12 at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center, where it will open on May 22. Lila Neugebauer will direct the production. All three plays were produced during their respective author’s Playwright-in-Residence season at the company. This marks the first time the three will be performed together.
Wood, a Tony winner for Side Man, recently appeared on Broadway in Hughie; he returns to Signature after their revival of Angels in America. Somerville has appeared on screen in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and on Broadway in Once in a Lifetime. Fraser earned Tony nominations for The Secret Garden and Romance/Romance; her additional Broadway credits include Gypsy and Tartuffe. Ngaujah received a Tony nod for his leading performance in Fela!, which marked his Broadway debut. He also appeared in Signature’s The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek.
Rounding out the cast are Nicholas Bruder (Angel Reapers), Crystal Dickinson (You Can’t Take It With You), Pia Glenn (You’re Welcome America), Ryan-James Hatanaka (Big Love), Mikeah Ernest Jennings (World of Wires), January LaVoy (Seven Guitars) and April Matthis (Hollow Roots).
