Two-time Tony winner Matthew Broderick will headline Conor McPherson’s Shining City at Irish Rep. Directed by Ciarán O’Reilly, the production will play a limited engagement May 17 through July 3. Opening night is scheduled for June 9 at the theater’s newly renovated Chelsea home at 132 West 22nd Street.
Along with Broderick (How to Suceed…, Brighton Beach Memoirs), the cast will include Billy Carter (The Weir), Lisa Dwan (the Beckett Trilogy) and James Russell (Port Authority).
John (Broderick) is seeking help from Ian, a counselor (Carter), after the unexpected death of his wife. Though shaken by the loss, John is troubled by more than just grief; he has begun to see his wife’s ghost in their home.
Shining City had its world premiere in London's West End at the Royal Court Theatre in June 2004. The U.S. premiere was at Broadway’s Biltmore Theatre, where it opened on May 9, 2006. The show was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Best Play; this production marks the first New York City revival since the Main Stem incarnation ten years ago.
The production will feature scenic design by Charlie Corcoran, costume design by Martha Hally and lighting design by Michael Gottlieb. Original music is by Ryan Rumery.
