The West End revival of Show Boat, which opened to stellar reviews on April 25, will close on August 27; it had originally been scheduled to run through to January next year. The transfer of Daniel Evans’ Sheffield Crucible production is playing at the New London Theatre.
With music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and based on the novel Show Boat by Edna Ferber, the tuner follows the lives of three generations of performers, stagehands and dock workers as their theater, the Cotton Blossom, floats along the Mississippi River. The musical was first performed on Broadway in 1927 and has been revived on the Great White Way and by opera companies numerous times since then. The tuner features such classic showtunes as "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Ol' Man River," "Make Believe" and “You Are Love.”
Malcolm Sinclair and Chris Peluso have joined original Sheffield cast members Gina Beck, Lucy Briers , Rebecca Trehearn, Emmanuel Kojo, Sandra Marvin, Alex Young and Danny Collins in the West End cast.
