Diana Degarmo will join the cast of The Marvelous Wonderettes off-Broadway. The musical theater alum and American Idol runner up will take over for the role of Suzy Simpson, currently played by swing Laura Woyasz, from May 25 through July 31. The return of the jukebox musical opened officially at Theatre Row's Kirk Theatre on April 28.
Degarmo has appeared on Broadway in Hairspray and Hair. Her additional credits include The Toxic Avenger off-Broadway and Brooklyn, 9 to 5 and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on tour.
In addition to Woyasz, the current cast also features Christina Bianco, Jenna Leigh Green and Sally Schwab. Created, written, and originally directed by Roger Bean, the previous New York production played at the Westside Theatre from September 2008 to January 2010.
The Marvelous Wonderettes takes a trip down memory lane to the 1958 Springfield High School prom. The show follows the lives and loves of the Wonderettes, four girls with big dreams and bigger crinoline skirts, from prom night to their 10-year reunion. The score highlights over 20 chart-topping hits of the era, including “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” and “It’s My Party.”
