Three dance-heavy Broadway shows celebrated wins at the 2016 Fred and Adele Astaire Awards. There was a tie for Best Choreographer between Hamilton’s Andy Blankenbuehler, Shuffle Along’s Savion Glover and On Your Feet!’s Sergio Trujillo.
Shuffle Along took two additional wins; Best Male Dancer went to Phillip Attmore, and the show received the award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway show. The award for Best Female Dancer went to She Loves Me’s Jane Krakowski.
For the first time in the award’s history, categories were added for off-Broadway work. Connor Gallagher and Paul McGill shared a win for Best Choreographer Off-Broadway for The Robber Bridegroom and The Legend of George McBride, respectively. Cagney headliner Robert Creighton took Outstanding Male Dancer while Sayonara’s Rumi Oyama won Outstanding Female Dancer.
In the Outstanding Choreography in Film category, Dave Scott took home the prize for High Strung.
The ceremony was held at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. As previously announced, honorary awards were given to Judith Jamison, Nigel Lythgoe, Maurice Hines and Dr. Joan Fallon.
The Astaire Awards is the only awards show to honor excellence in dance and choreography on stage and in film. They were first started in 1982 by the late Fred Astaire and Douglas Watt.
