Ana Villafañe & Sutton Foster to Celebrate July 4
The rhythm is going to get Washington, D.C.! Ana Villafañe and the cast of the Gloria and Emilio Estefan bio-musical On Your Feet! will perform as part of the national Independence Day celebration, A Capitol Fourth, on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Other big names tapped for the event, which honors America’s 240th birthday, include two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster and the West End-bound Amber Riley. The show is scheduled to air on PBS on July 4 at 8PM ET.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Circling Broadway?
We’re keeping an eye on this one. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical, adapted from Jeff Kinney’s best-selling children’s books and the Fox 2000 films, could be aiming for Broadway. Directed and choreographed by Rachel Rockwell, with music and lyrics by Michael Mahler and Alan Schmuckler, the production has been running at the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis. MPR reports that the tuner’s producers, which include Kevin McCollum (Something Rotten!) are investigating the show's next incarnation.
From Here to Eternity Set for U.S. Premiere
After landing in London’s West End in 2013, a reworked version of Tim Rice’s new tuner From Here to Eternity will make its North American premiere at the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival. The Aladdin, Evita and Superstar’s scribe’s work is based on the 1951 novel and 1953 Oscar-winning film of the same name, and has music by Stuart Brayson. Helmed and choreographed by Brett Smock, the show is scheduled to premiere on June 29 and will run through July 20 at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in Auburn, New York.
Zachary Levi Will Emcee the Jimmys
2016 Tony nominee Zachary Levi (She Loves Me) will host the Jimmy (aka National High School Musical Theater) Awards on June 27. 62 high school students from across America will compete for the Jimmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Actress at the eighth annual presentation, with the talent showcase featuring both ensemble and solo performances. The ceremony is set to take place on June 27 at the Minskoff Theatre, and we’re already looking forward to catching a glimpse of the stars of tomorrow!
