The In the Heights movie is starting to shape up. Jon M. Chu is in early talks to helm the big screen adaptation of the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical, according to Variety.
Pulitzer Prize winner Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the book for the 2008 Tony-winning musical, is at work on a screenplay adaptation. Plans for Weinstein to produce the film were reported in May. Miranda will also produce, as will Scott Sanders.
Chu is no stranger to showcasing big numbers and dance moves on screen, having helmed Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D. His additional credits include the Justin Bieber concert documentaries Never Say Never and Believe, Jem and the Holograms and Now You See Me 2.
In the Heights opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (coincidentally the home of Hamilton as well) in 2008 and marked Miranda’s Broadway debut. The show won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score for Miranda, who was also nominated for his performance.
