It’s Friday, and you know what that means: time to head home, cocoon yourself on the couch and binge-watch both seasons of Smash because it’s honestly been a while since you last watched it and Debra Messing would probably appreciate it. (Just us? Fine.) Whatever you have planned for the weekend, put it on hold and study up on the Lessons of the Week. We learned a lot from our Broadway favorites over the past seven days; read all about it below!
Idina's Got To Give a Little, Take a Little
Idina Menzel is the wind beneath our wings, which makes total sense with all that gravity defying and whatnot. The Tony-winning ice queen is set to star in a Lifetime remake of Beaches as struggling actress CC (played originally by Bette Midler). We don’t know who will play her bestie Hillary yet, but we’re secretly hoping it’s also Idina Menzel. She can wear a blazer for one and a cardigan for the other.
Norm Lewis Won't Play Gloria Estefan
Ana Villafañe makes it happen eight times a week on Broadway as Gloria Estefan in On Your Feet!, which is something that Norm Lewis will likely never have on his resume, despite being a tremendously talented performer. That said, we’re shocked he failed to sing the proper lyrics while hanging out with our new vlogger. Come on. Do you not even feel the rhythm of the music getting stronga’, Norm?
Everything's Coming Up Quinto
It’s about time for the next revival of Gypsy (isn’t it always, really?), and though there’s chatter of Imelda Staunton bringing her Olivier-winning stint to the States, she’ll have to pry it from Zachary Quinto. The stage and screen star released a video of him (as Spock) channeling his inner Patti LuPone. We can totally see it—provided those pointed ears will fit under a floral hat.
"Love" Brought Cagney & Lacey Together
Speaking of Mama Roses, Tyne Daly headed to the Democratic National Convention with a very special bus buddy: the Cagney to her Lacey, Sharon Gless! The TV duo took part in Broadway for Orlando’s performance of “What the World Needs Now,” and in addition to love (and common sense and decency), the answer is clearly a Cagney & Lacey revival with the two. If it can happen to Gilmore Girls…
Don't Steal Drew Gehling's Towels
If you’re ever visiting the boys of Waitress backstage, be polite. Use a coaster (one designed by Jessie Mueller) and most importantly: don’t steal their towels. If you do, they’ll know—because they have their names printed on them, thanks to their dresser. Drew Gehling showed his off when we toured his dressing room, and to be honest, we feel left out. And we suspect these two do, too.
Campayno's Wearing the Pants, Now
The Sound of Music Live!’s Michael Campayno will make his Broadway debut as Fiyero in Wicked, and we couldn’t be happier for him. We’re sure he’ll make a thrillifying Fiyero, in part because we remember back in 2013, when the hills were alive with the sound of people tweeting about his shorts. Those signature khaki pants are vital to his new role, and something tells us he’ll take care of them quite nicely.
David Yazbek Has a Miraculous Muse
David Yazbek has had a plethora of stage legends sing his work, from Patti LuPone to John Lithgow to a naked Patrick Wilson. His latest muse: Broadway.com vlogger/naked babka eater Adam Kantor. The Fiddler fave worked with the composer on a reading of The Band’s Visit, and confessed he’d put him in any of his shows. We can totally see Kantor as a Spanish model who loves voicemails.
Rachel Dratch Is One with DanRad
Rachel Dratch is currently playing mother to Daniel Radcliffe in Privacy off-Broadway. She actually has some experience to draw from, as Dratch played Radcliffe (or at least a Radcliffe-inspired Harry Potter) on Saturday Night Live. So first she played him, then his mother. What comes next? His angel of music lurking in the opera house walls? His blonde, popular roommate who travels by bubble?
There Is a God & He Looks Like Grisetti
Josh Grisetti may be tapping into the future over at Something Rotten!, but it’s not his first mystical awakening. While stopping by Live at Five, the stage favorite discussed his drug-induced conversation with God (it’s all explained in his book), during which time God took the form of...Josh Grisetti. This is slightly confusing, because we all know God looks like Sean Hayes. And sometimes Jim Parsons.
Tugger & Mistoffelees Are Frisky Felines
Move over, Bombalurina, Cassandra and Demeter: Rum Tum Tugger only has eyes for the magical Mr. Mistoffelees. In his penultimate Cats vlog, Tyler Hanes showed off fan art that he and his roommate found of their respective feline characters in some PG-13 situations. We haven’t read into this subtext before, but we’re happy for the two of them. Hope you serve both pheasant and grouse at the wedding.
