A tattooed Will Chase in Something Rotten! isn't the only one keeping the Bard cool in New York. Tix are now available to catch Othello: The Remix (you heard that right), the Q Brothers' hip-hop telling of Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name (minus "The Remix," of course). The off-Broadway production, produced by John Leguizamo, will begin performances on October 25 at the Westside Theatre. Opening night is set for November 17.
Gregory and Jeffrey Qaiyum—the Q Brothers—direct and star in the piece. This marks their third adaptation of Shakespeare, following Funk It Up About Nothin' and The Bomb-itty of Errors. Their additional shows include A Q Brothers Christmas Carol and Scratch and Burn.
Othello: The Remix takes the writing of Shakespeare and places it over original hip-hop beats, proving the Bard was the original mater of rhythm and rhyme. In addition to GQ and JQ, the cast will feature Postell Pringle as Othello, as well as Jackson Doran and DJ Supernova.
The show was originally commissioned by The Old Globe Theatre in 2012. It has since played Edinburgh, German, South Korea and Chicago, where it recently played a return engagement to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
