Get ready for a completely immersive theatrical experience—complete with water tricks and a head shaman! Simon McBurney begins performances in his one-man show The Encounter on September 20. The Tony nominee co-directs the production, which is scheduled to open on September 29, alongside Kirsty Housley. The limited engagement, which presents a unique, sensory experience for the Golden Theatre's lucky audience members, will run through January 8, 2017.
The Encounter premiered in August 2015 at the Edinburgh International Festival before transferring to the Barbican. In the one-man play, McBurney draws from Amazon Beaming, a book by Petru Popescu about National Geographic writer and photographer Loren McIntyre’s experience with tribes along the Amazon River.
McBurney received a Tony nomination for directing a revival of The Chairs; he also helmed a revival of All My Sons on Broadway. As artistic director of the theater company Complicite, he helmed and penned the play A Disappearing Number. His additional directorial credits include The Elephant Vanishes, The Master and Margarita and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Onscreen, he’s appeared in Rev, The Borgias, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation and The Conjuring 2.
Richard Katz will perform the role at certain perormances.
