If you’re unable to catch Daniel Craig and David Oyelowo in Othello at New York Theatre Workshop, don’t be too consumed by jealousy. The downtown production, directed by Tony winner Sam Gold, could make its way to Broadway. According to the New York Post, James Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli is behind the potential transfer, which could happen as early as this spring.
Last year, Craig revealed he was done with the Great White Way, saying, “I’ve done Broadway and I was happy with that, but I don’t want to do Broadway anymore.” However, it seems a juicy role like Iago, a co-star like Oyelowo in the title role and a plethora of raves could be enough to change his tune.
The three-quarter thrust staging presents the story in the contemporary setting of the barracks in an army camp. There’s camo; there’s modern technology; there’s a celebratory performance of “Hotline Bling.”
In addition to Oyelowo and Craig, the NYTW production features Finn Wittrock (slated to appear on Broadway this spring in the Gold-helmed The Glass Menagerie), David Wilson Barnes, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Rachel Brosnahan, Blake DeLong, Glenn Fitzgerald, Slate Holmgren, Anthony Michael Lopez, Matthew Maher, Nikki Massoud and Kyle Vincent Terry. The production is scheduled to run through January 18, 2017.
