Cinderella is returning to the stage as you have never seen it before. A new adaptation of the beloved fairy tale, featuring an original score by Tony-winning hit maker Andrew Lloyd Webber, will make its way to London's Gillian Lynne Theatre this September for a debut staging. Lloyd Webber's School of Rock collaborators Laurence Connor and JoAnn Hunter will direct and choreograph the musical, which will feature a new book by Emmy nominee Emerald Fennell and lyrics by Tony winner David Zippel.
"I have long wanted to write my own version of Cinderella but could never find a take on the classic story that really grabbed me," said Lloyd Webber in a statement. "Emerald Fennell has written something truly exciting and original, and the moment I read her outline I knew I'd found my latest collaborator. I'm very pleased to be working with David Zippel, a hugely witty lyricist, once again. I'm also excited to be reunited with Laurence and JoAnn, who I loved creating School of Rock with and who delivered a knockout Joseph last Summer at The London Palladium, where it rightfully returns in June."
Regarding the musical's plot, in a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lloyd Webber said that the show would feature Cinderella as a "modern heroine." At that stage in the musical's development, Everybody's Talking About Jamie librettist Tom MacRae was on board as co-book writer with Fennell.
While casting has yet to be announced for the previously reported Cinderella, a 2019 workshop starred Carrie H. Fletcher (Les Misérables) in the title role.
The Gillian Lynne Theatre is currently home to Lloyd Webber's School of Rock, which will conclude its run on March 1.
