Freestyle Love Supreme, the high-energy show that blends hip-hop, improvisational theater, music and vocal stylings, has recouped its Broadway investment in just 14 weeks, producers announced today. The production plays the Booth Theatre, where it will conclude its extended run on January 12.
Freestyle Love Supreme arrived on Broadway on September 13 after a sold-out engagement at off-Broadway's Greenwich House Theater. Conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale, the show features six talented performers providing nonstop action throughout a fast-paced evening, spinning cues from the audience into humorous bits, instantaneous songs and fully realized musical numbers.
The Broadway mounting boasts a cast that includes Andrew Bancroft AKA "Jelly Donut," Arthur Lewis AKA "Arthur the Geniuses," Bill Sherman AKA "King Sherman," Chris Sullivan AKA "Shockwave," Anthony Veneziale AKA "Two-Touch" and Utkarsh Ambudkar AKA "UTK."
Special guest stars have included Miranda along with Wayne Brady, Daveed Diggs, Ashley Pérez Flanagan, James Monroe Iglehart, Christopher Jackson, Alex Lacamoire, Sarah Kay, Bill Sherman, in addition to surprise appearances by Josh Groban, Jimmy Fallon, Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren.
Kail directs the production, which officially opened on October 2, 2019. Freestyle Love Supreme was originally developed and produced in 2004 by Ars Nova in association with producer Jill Furman.
