ABC is taking a roll in the hay! The network has announced Young Frankenstein Live! as its newest live musical event, to be produced by Mel Brooks, according to Deadline.
Based on the 2007 Broadway musical adaptation of Brooks and Gene Wilder's 1974 film, Young Frankenstein Live! will feature Brooks' original music and lyrics from the stage show. A comedic re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic Frankenstein, the musical follows Frederick Frankenstein, an esteemed New York brain surgeon and professor, as he inherits a castle and laboratory in Transylvania from his deranged genius grandfather. He now faces a dilemma: does he continue to run from his family’s tortured past or does he stay in Transylvania to carry on his grandfather's mad experiments?
The Broadway musical Young Frankenstein, featuring a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, debuted on Broadway on November 8, 2007 and continued through January 4, 2009. That original production, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, boasted a cast that included Roger Bart as Frederick Frankenstein, Sutton Foster as Inga, Megan Mullally as Elizabeth, Shuler Hensley as The Monster and Fred Applegate as Inspector Kemp, with Andrea Martin and Christopher Fitzgerald in Tony-nominated turns as Frau Blucher and Igor, respectively.
Casting and an airdate for Young Frankenstein Live! will be announced soon. Till then, look back at opening night of the Broadway production below.
