Alison Luff to Lead Wrestling Drama Series on Starz
Alison Luff, the Broadway star most recently seen as Jenna in Waitress, has been cast in the lead role of Heels, a new hourlong drama series on Starz, according to Deadline. Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig will co-star in the eight-episode series, set in the world of professional wrestling. Luff will play Staci Spade, "the reluctant young matriarch of a family-owned Southern wrestling promotion. Having married into the world of independent wrestling, she soon learns that she has to contend with the emotional stakes her in-laws have invested in their wrestling goals and the demands it puts on her family." In addition to her star turn in Waitress, Luff has appeared on Broadway in Escape to Margaritaville, Les Misérables, Matilda, Scandalous, Mamma Mia! and Ghost.
Sasha Allen, Andréa Burns & Hannah Elless Join Starry Carmel Dean Concert
A trio of stage stars have been added to the lineup of talent set to appear in Well-Behaved Women, a song cycle featuring the music of Carmel Dean. The previously announced event will be held at Joe's Pub on January 25 at 7:00pm. Newly announced stars include Sasha Allen (For Colored Girls), Andréa Burns (The Rose Tattoo) and Hannah Elless (A Christmas Carol). They join the previously announced LaChanze, Liz Callaway, Bonnie Milligan, Barbara Walsh, Katie Thompson, Natascia Diaz, Kuhoo Verma and Melissa Rose Hirsh. Well-Behaved Women centers on the powerful stories of groundbreaking women including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Harriet Tubman, Frida Kahlo, Billie Jean King and Malala Yousafzai told through original songs, celebrating the ways in which their bad-ass behavior helped them make history.
Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees Extends Again Off-Broadway
The hit solo play Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees has been given a fourth extension through February 16 at off-Broadway's Lucille Lortel Theatre. Novak's celebrated one-woman comedy was originally announced to play a limited run at the Cherry Lane Theatre through August 18, 2019 and moved to the Lortel shortly after. Novak's play is described as an unexpectedly philosophical show that's part feminist outcry, part coming-of-age tale of triumph. Directed by John Early, the play is presented by Natasha Lyonne and executive-produced by Mike Birbiglia.
London's Sondheim Theatre Opening Event Delayed After Stephen Sondheim Suffers Fall
Producer and theater owner Cameron Mackintosh has announced that a special opening event planned for London's Sondheim Theatre has been delayed after legendary composer Stephen Sondheim experienced a fall. Sondheim had planned to attend the event on January 14 at the newly redesigned theater, currently home to Les Misérables. The event will now take place later this year, with an exact date to be announced soon.
In the Light Musical Announces Crowdsourcing Campaign for Album Featuring Jeremy Jordan
Composer-lyricist Michael Mott has launched a crowdsourcing campaign to help make a studio concept recording of his original musical In the Light, A Faustian Tale. Tony nominee Jeremy Jordan will be featured on the recording along with a group of soon-to-be-announced stars with Broadway cred. Featuring an original score by Mott and a book by Nathan Wright, In the Light will feature orchestrations by Kim Scharnberg.
