A talented group of Broadway alums have been nominated for 2020 NAACP Image Awards. Winners will be revealed during a live TV broadcast on BET Networks on February 22 at 8:00pm.
Among the nominees from the world of theater is Tony winner Billy Porter (Kinky Boots), who earned nominations in the categories of Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for his Emmy-winning turn on FX's Pose.
Tony winner Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple) was honored with three nominations for her work on the film Harriet, including Outstanding Lead Actress, Outstanding Song—Traditional (for "Stand Up") and Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture. Her co-star, Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), also received a nod for his performance in the film.
Other Broadway vets receiving nominations include two-time Tony winner Viola Davis (Fences) for How to Get Away With Murder, two-time Tony winner James Earl Jones (The Gin Game) for his voiceover performance in the Lion King remake, Emmy-nominated Broadway alum Tituss Burgess (The Little Mermaid) for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dolemite Is My Name, Tony nominee Lupita Nyong'o (Eclipsed) for Us and Serengeti and Tony nominee Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Ghost) for Dolemite Is My Name.
Tony-winning director Kenny Leon (currently represented on Broadway by A Soldier's Play) earned a nomination for helming Netflix's screen adaptation of the Broadway play American Son. Pulitzer-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog) was nommed for Native Son and Tony nominee Debbie Allen (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) earned a nod for her direction of an episode of Grey's Anatomy.
The NAACP Image Awards honors the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film and also recognizes individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.
