Netflix has nabbed the rights to a developing film based on the life of iconic West Side Story songwriter Leonard Bernstein, according to Deadline. Tony nominee Bradley Cooper will direct and star as the music maker in the currently untitled film—previously titled Bernstein—with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg newly aboard as co-producers with Cooper, who is penning the film with Oscar-winning Spotlight writer Josh Singer.
The film is expected to span 30 years, recalling the story of the marriage between Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. The late, legendary Bernstein earned a 1953 Tony Award for his music to Wonderful Town; his other musical scores include West Side Story, Candide, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, On the Town and Peter Pan. In Hollywood, his achievements include an Oscar nomination, two Grammy nods and seven Emmy Awards.
Cooper, a Tony nominee for his turn as John Merrick in The Elephant Man, earned Oscar nominations for starring in American Sniper, American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook and a trio of additional noms for co-writing, co-producing and starring in A Star Is Born. He is a current Oscar nominee as a producer of Joker.
Further details on the Bernstein biopic are forthcoming.
